Saturday, Saturday!

Saturday, Saturday!

September 25, 2009
My Saturdays are for catching up around here and getting things done.  This year, however, has been soooo busy that there has not been a Saturday in a while when I have been able to do that.  Well, not this Saturday.

The hail storms that came through put holes in all of my plastic.  I ordered the plastic several weeks ago and ...do I dare go into details?  I neglected to double check the item number against a detailed invoice to see which roll of plastic went on which building.  When eyeballing the size of the rolls, I guessed and I guessed wrong.  We realized this when we pulled the bottom layer over the hoops and had LOTS of excess plastic.  So, I ran up to the office and checked.  Yep!  Wrong roll of plastic on the wrong greenhouse.  So we pull it down.  Prep the next roll of plastic and Kayla suggests to unroll this the whole length of the greenhouse and then unroll the next layer right over the top so it is done and we just pull it up and over.

Here is a little background on greenhouse plastic.  It comes in the length you ordered it and there are no markings telling you where you need to cut it.  So, for this 100' roll of plastic we unrolled it once longer than the building to make sure it is covered and cut. Then turned around and unrolled it again and came up about 7' too short.  Let me tell you, this is not a good situation.  I called the company to tell them about my problem and they will get back to me.  Two days later, thank you.

Long and short of it, I had to order another roll of the 42' plastic.  This time I got 106' of it.  And Saturday just so happen to be the day greenhouse #2 was getting replaced.  Because the weather is to change.
Believe it or not, but it took 5 of us 6 hours to get it changed, and boy was I tired.  Have to say that I did not feel too bad though, as the other four guys were just as tired as I was!

I spent the rest of the afternoon cleaning out the garage and taking supplies down to the new shed we built.  It won't be long and I will have it filled.  Then I went and pulled weeds in the cold frame while it rained.  That was a neat experience to pull weeds with the crickets singing in the background while the rain beats down on the plastic.  Things are coming along good.  We should be having some summer squash or zucchini shortly, radishes, and Swiss chard.  The lettuce, beets, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and kohlrabi are growing well too, but will take longer to mature.

Needless to say, I slept quite well.
